Health Research Council for People of African Descent Launches Canada-wide Engagement Series

TORONTO, Ontario, March 1, 2023 – Today, the Health Research Council for People of African Descent (HRCPAD) announced the launch of its cross-Canada engagement series which will focus on building and supporting:

  1. A national framework and repository for Black health research;
  2. Ongoing efforts to collect and curate Black-focused health data; and
  3. Engagement in philanthropic activities that support allies and stakeholders whose work eliminates disparities in treatment outcomes for Black Canadians.

In keeping with that commitment, members of the public are invited to the inaugural event in the series, Health in Black Skin, on April 3, 2023 at 7:00 pm EST. The event is hosted in partnership with the City of Toronto. Persons wishing to attend should register at https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/health-in-black-skin-tickets-577535553387.

The event builds on discussions during Black Mental Health Week which was celebrated from March 6-12, 2023. It also amplifies the Toronto Black community’s demand to end oppression and the compounding and intersecting health impacts on Black people in all spaces.

HRCPAD acknowledges the crucial need to consider the varied lived experiences of Black people including violence, poverty, housing, and under-employment, all of which contribute significantly to the mental health deficits of Black Canadians.
